Treasurer Tax Sale Information/Eligibility

Tax Sale Information / Eligibility
All parcels that have a balance due for taxes and special assessments from the prior year's Spring installment are eligible for the Treasurer's Tax Sale. There are several deadlines for making payments, with increasing amounts due, please contact our office for more information.

On or before the first of July each year or 51 days after the tax payment due date, a list is compiled of delinquent properties. At that time an additional tax sale charge is added, a certified letter is sent to each property owner, and all names and addresses are published in two local newspapers.

Tax Sales must be held no later than 171 days after the list is certified to the Auditor. Lake County's Tax Sale is conducted entirely online — there is no in-person sale. Registration, bidding, and the property listing are handled through the county's online tax sale vendor. The minimum acceptable bid is everything owed on the parcel through the current year as of the date of the sale, and the lien is sold to the highest bidder. For the current registration window, sale dates, and a link to the property listing, see the Lake County Treasurer Tax Sale page.

Properties that do not sell at the Treasurer's tax sale have a certificate issued to the Lake County Board of Commissioners, which may offer the certificates at the Commissioners' Tax Sale following the statutes for the tax sale. After payment is received for the lien, the Lake County Auditor issues the Tax Sale Certificate.

Redemption: Redemption amounts must be calculated by our office. To obtain a redemption amount or for information on assuming title, please contact the Lake County Auditor's Office directly at (219) 755-3155.

The Indiana statutes governing the tax sale can be found in IC 6-1.1-24 and IC 6-1.1-25. This statute is available on the internet here.
